Old ionisation alarms don't cut it — photoelectric is the mandated type in every room.

From 1 January 2027 it applies to all owner-occupied homes in Queensland. Rental properties and homes being sold have already had to meet the standard since 2022, so if you're selling or leasing, you need it now rather than later.
Battery-only alarms can be fitted by a homeowner, but they still have to be photoelectric and interconnected with every other alarm in the house, which is where DIY usually falls over. Hardwired alarms must be installed by a licensed electrician.
Wireless is far less invasive in an existing home with no ceiling access — the alarms talk to each other by radio. Hardwired is the better option during a renovation when the ceiling is open anyway. Both meet the standard.
One in every bedroom, one in the hallway connecting bedrooms, and one on every level — even levels without bedrooms. A three-bedroom single-storey home typically needs four. We'll count it properly on site.
For owner-occupiers, non-compliance is picked up at the point of sale — you'll need to declare the alarm status on the transfer documents. For rentals, it's already a legal requirement with penalties for landlords.
